Drawing Traffic and Making the Sale
Different Kinds of Traffic
Getting traffic to your online site is a challenge but doable. The best kind of traffic is a free referral from someone who knows you or has already done business with you and they already told the customer you may have what they want. The second kind of traffic is organic search, like Google, Yahoo, and MSN because you are not paying someone for customers visiting your internet business. The third and fourth kind of free traffic are blogging and article referrals which are generated based on your blogs or your articles being published.
Paying for your traffic is also a viable option. It could result in getting traffic to your site faster but it is still up to you to write a compelling ad which prospects will click on to go to your web site. Paying for your traffic includes pay for click, or paid advertising on sites like Yahoo, Google, E Bay, and MSN to name a few. You can also pay internet companies whose business is to redirect traffic to your site (the problem with this approach is the customers may not be relevant to your online business). In addition, there are affiliate arrangements where you pay for customers when they are referred by the affiliate and purchase something.
Giving Them What They Want
Remember you have to let people know who you are, where you are, and what you do, but the most important thing you have to do is let the customer know you can "Give them what they want". They may need something completely different but they will only buy what they want. The only time they will buy what they need is when it is consistent with what they want. So your goal in marketing is "always give or sell them what they want not what you think they need.
It is not easy to know what the customers want but it is your job to find it out. What you want to do is make it easy for them to make the decision and that means you don't want to make it difficult to find you and make their buying decision confusing once they are on your internet site. While it is true that some customers will browse (like they do in the mall store) it is also true that they will browse somewhere else and not stay at your store front.
Another way to make money in your online internet business is to become a marketer of products that others sell. In this case, you direct customers to an internet site that sells products and services and the company pays you a fee or commission when the customer buys. This is called affiliate marketing.
